Shopify, Adobe Commerce or BigCommerce: which e-commerce platform fits your business?

QualityPro Hub operations team

Short answer: choose Shopify when you want to sell quickly and run the store with a small team, BigCommerce when you need open APIs and built-in B2B features without managing servers, and Adobe Commerce when you have complex catalogs, heavy customization needs and a development team to support it. Decide on your catalog, your selling model and your team, not on feature lists.

Who this is for: founders, marketing and operations leaders choosing a first e-commerce platform, or replatforming a store that has outgrown its setup.

Why is choosing a platform harder than it looks?

All three platforms can run a successful store. The demos look alike, and every vendor can show the feature you ask about. The real differences show up a year later: how much a change costs, who has to make it, and how well the store connects to your CRM, ERP and marketing automation. That's what you should compare.

How do the three platforms compare?

Shopify BigCommerce Adobe Commerce
Hosting Fully hosted Fully hosted Adobe cloud or self-managed
Best fit Direct-to-consumer brands and growing B2C stores Mid-market B2C and B2B, multi-storefront Enterprise, complex catalogs, many regions
Customization Themes and a large app ecosystem Open APIs, strong headless options Almost unlimited, through code
B2B selling Available on higher plans Built in on its B2B edition Built in and highly configurable
Team you need A marketer or operator can run it An operator plus occasional developer help A dedicated developer or agency partner
Main cost driver Plan, apps and payment fees Plan tier tied to sales volume License, hosting and ongoing development

When does Shopify fit best?

  • You want to launch or relaunch in weeks, not months.
  • Your catalog is fairly simple: a few hundred or a few thousand products with standard variants.
  • A small team will run the store day to day without a developer.
  • You sell mostly direct to consumers, with some wholesale on the side.

Watch out for app sprawl. Each app solves one problem and adds a monthly fee, a script on your pages and another place data can break.

When does BigCommerce fit best?

  • You sell to businesses and consumers, and need price lists, quotes or company accounts.
  • You want several storefronts or brands run from one back office.
  • You plan a headless front end, or connect heavily to an ERP or PIM.
  • You want a hosted platform but more openness than a closed app model.

When does Adobe Commerce fit best?

  • Your catalog is large or complex, with configurable products, custom pricing rules or many regions and currencies.
  • Your checkout, fulfillment or approval flows are specific to how your business runs.
  • You already use Adobe Experience Cloud, or plan to.
  • You have, or will fund, a development team to maintain the store over time.

Watch out for total cost. The license is only part of it. Upgrades, hosting, security patches and custom code add up every year.

What should you check before you sign?

  1. Integrations: confirm how the platform connects to your CRM, ERP, email and support tools, and who maintains each connection.
  2. Total cost over three years: license, apps or extensions, payment fees, hosting, development and agency support.
  3. Who runs it: write down which tasks your team will do and which need a developer.
  4. Data you need to move: customers, orders, subscriptions, reviews and redirects for every old URL.
  5. Reporting: make sure order and customer data reaches your analytics and marketing tools the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Can we start on Shopify and move later?

Yes, and many brands do. Plan for it by keeping customer and order data clean, using standard product structures and documenting every app you add, so a future move is a project, not a rescue.

Is Adobe Commerce the same as Magento?

Adobe Commerce is the paid, enterprise version of the platform previously known as Magento. The free open-source edition still exists, but it comes without Adobe's hosting, support and business features.

How long does a replatform take?

A straightforward move to a hosted platform often takes two to four months. Complex B2B or multi-region builds can take six months or more. Data migration and integrations usually take longer than the store design.
